About Jerry Smith
Jerry “Smitty” Smith was a man whose warmth and friendliness touched countless lives. Known for his ability to forge lasting friendships, Smitty had a unique gift for connecting with people. Whether rekindling old friendships or making new ones, he effortlessly built bonds wherever he went. His generous spirit shone brightly; he often extended a helping hand to those in need, offering words of encouragement, giving away clothing, money, and even the shoes from his feet to those he felt needed them more.
Jerry’s life was rich with experiences and connections. He worked in various roles, from construction jobs with the Leach family, John and Hildegard DeGreen, and DRS, to serving as a bellhop at the Ritz Carlton and Hawk’s Cay resorts. It was in these latter roles that Jerry seemed to find his greatest joy—serving others and engaging with a diverse range of people. His ability to relate to individuals from all walks of life was truly remarkable.
The immense outpouring of love at Jerry’s benefit and funeral, attended by hundreds, reflected the loyalty, kindness, and unassuming nature he was known for. Proverbs 18:24 captures Jerry’s essence perfectly: “A man who has friends must himself be friendly, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.” Jerry was that friend—a man with a thousand stories about friends from every walk of life, each one filled with a fond memory or a great story.
Jerry lived from November 23, 1953, to January 12, 2015, and was a proud graduate of Chardon High School, class of 1972. One of the greatest joys of his life was the birth of his daughter, Jacqueline, in October 2002. Her education was a priority for him, and he believed in the power of opportunity to change lives. The scholarship in his name reflects this belief and is a fitting tribute to his memory. It serves as a way to share his friendship, his smile, and his generous spirit with those who need a little help.
Jerry would be deeply touched by the creation of this scholarship in his honor. Loved by so many, this scholarship is a meaningful way to express that love and to continue his legacy of kindness and support. In loving memory of our friend, “Smitty,” may this scholarship be a source of hope and opportunity, just as he was to so many.
