About the Melzer-Smith Memorial Foundation
Founded in 2016, the Melzer-Smith Memorial Foundation is committed to empowering Chardon High School graduates to pursue their dreams of higher education. We believe in fostering the growth of these young individuals, helping them build successful careers and become positive forces in their communities.
Since June 2017, we’ve proudly offered two one-year scholarships of $1,000 each and four one-year scholarships of $500 each. These awards are given to outstanding graduates from Chardon High School, chosen by a dedicated committee appointed by our foundation’s directors. Recipients are announced at the Commencement Ceremony, and funds are disbursed during the ceremony or within 14 days after.
Our goal is to continually raise funds to increase the number and value of the scholarships we provide, giving more students the chance to achieve their educational goals.
Scholarship Guidelines
- Eligibility: Graduates of Chardon High School who hold a diploma from the Chardon Local School District or its successor.
- Enrollment Requirement: Must be enrolled in a 2- or 4-year college, university, or trade school in Ohio, starting by September 30 of the award year.
- Application: A 500-word essay explaining why they deserve the scholarship.
Once ratified by the Board of Directors, the scholarship committee’s decision is final. If suitable applicants aren’t found in a given year, the scholarship funds will be retained for future awards.
